Angel Of Mercy - Mother Teresa Of Calcutta
The sudden death of mother Teresa was a shock to us all especially me. A shock because though she was old and active in her cause of helping the helpless to the very end, I could not help feeling that I have lost a mother and that the whole world, in fact all of humanity has just suffered a blow. She is the example of who and what we strive to be in our own little ways.
Her sense of kindness and concern for the poor and helpless especially the dying was exemplary to all people and mothers of our age. She shone with brilliant light, peaceful charm and a remarkable halo always above her head even in life that proclaimed this was a true servant of the Father Most High.
What a blessing she was and a shining example she still remains to remind us all that the reason we journeyed to the earth is not so that we can build and buy fantastic houses, dress in glamour gear, feed our senses with countless pleasures, and go out of this world, without making a positive impact on any suffering soul. No. We didn’t come here for rock and roll! We came to make a difference.
It seemed Princess Diana understood that, so much so she sought to walk in the light that Mother Teresa did. Always found with the poor, broken, helpless and suffering. A trait many that people in high places despised. Mother Teresa seems to have inspired many generations both high and low. Are you one of them?
Whilst the world mourned the passing of Diana, Princess of Wales, the news came of a further devastating loss for humanity. At 87 years old, Mother Teresa of Calcutta had died.
Kathryn Spink who worked with Mother Teresa for thirteen years, has written a book titled ‘Mother Teresa’ that tells the story of her remarkable life. In 1991 Mother Teresa gave Kathryn Spink permission to proceed with a full account of her life and work, but only on the condition that it was published after her death, such was her sense of modesty and simplicity, not purposefully wanting to attract attention to her herself as a person but always enigmatic at shifting all our focus onto the poor and suffering.
For the first time in paperback, the full story of Mother Teresa's remarkable life has been told. Drawing on private conversations and letters embargoed until after her death. The authorized biography portrays a compassionate and saintly woman who was, at times, also flawed.
The beloved Mother Teresa founded her Missionaries of Charity in 1938 and opened her first Home in 1954. Others have been opened around the world, wherever their "work of love" has been needed. As a result Mother Teresa has become one of the best known Christian figures in the twentieth century. She was also a remarkable woman of spiritual substance.
During her lifetime, in her humility Mother Teresa resisted many offers to have her full biography written. Then, in 1991, after realizing that accounts of her life could inspire others, she gave Kathryn Spink, who had long been intimately involved with the work of Mother Teresa, her order, and her co-workers, around the world, permission to proceed with a complete biography on the understanding that it would not be finished until after her death. It’s a book worth reading. Every woman should have it on their shelf.
The complete story of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, renowned founder of the Missionaries of Charity and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, a woman regarded by millions as a contemporary Saint for her dedication to serving the poorest of the poor is one we should all be proud of; whether you are Moslem, Catholic, Born again or an unbeliever. Her life story challenges you and I to question our purpose in life. She challenges us to ask ourselves these fundamental questions:
a) What am I doing on this earth?
b) What have I been sent here for or what have I come to do?
c) Who have I touched? To whom have I been a blessing?
d) How many lives have been healed, blessed, elevated, improved and positively affected by my journey through life?
e) What have I done for the poor, broken, dying, hurting, and sorrowing and so on?
I am not just talking about giving donations to ease your conscience; I mean what is your legacy of kindness to humanity?
We can keep on asking each other a million and one blunt, mind probing and reality checking questions, but the truth is how much truth about our life’s journey are we prepared to face? How much of our own pain can we set aside so that we can help to nurse, reduce or eradicate the pain of others worse off than we are?
Listen: From her humble childhood in the Balkans to her passionate work in India, from attending to war victims in Lebanon to appealing to President George Bush and the deposed Saddam Hussein to choose peace over war, the beloved Mother Teresa was always motivated by a concern for life based on absolute faith and a fundamental desire to heal the world. So let me ask you this: What drives you?
She consistently claimed that she was simply responding to Christ's boundless love for her and for all of humanity. She said, she simply saw Christ in everyone she meets. So what do you see?
Let me leave you here to ponder on that heart probing question my beloved! May goodness and mercy awaken you to your own calling today regardless of your faith! Amen!
