<h1>Peace Raisers: Benazir Bhutoo - A Woman of Courage & Vision</h1> <br>
<p>For a woman worthy of respect like Benazir Bhutto to rise to a position of great political prominence and attain the highest office in Pakistan was not only uncommon, it is was completely unusual in a very male dominated society governed by Islamic Sharia laws and principles and a community driven by ancient ideology influenced by old traditions that define who a woman is and where her place is in society. </p>
In the face of Islamic fundamentalism and competitive gender struggle she excelled and proved that a woman is worthy of respect in this world, Islamic or not.<p>
She was a new breed politician, who chaired the Pakistan people’s party. Benazir Bhutto became the first women elected to lead a Muslim state, in 1988, advancing the western worlds view of Middle Eastern equality rights and democracy. <p>
A Shia Muslim by faith, Benazir was the eldest child of a former prime minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and so came from a long line of men willing to lay down their lives for their country, who used their faith as a moral compass.<p>
When Bhutto was sworn in she was only thirty-five years old. Problems came 20 months later when then president Ghulam Ishaq had her removed from office of alleged corruption. Benazir refused to allow her nation and her people to be terrorized by a dictatorship and worked hard to eliminate and keep political terrorism at bay.<p>
Benazir was rightfully awarded the Prize for Freedom by Liberal International. Her accomplishments during her time in office were in initiatives for nationalist reform, which would have modernized Pakistan. However, most conservatives characterized this as complete modernization. Following that, Bhutto was dismissed from government in 1990 and was never even tried for the alleged corruption charges.<p>
This however did not stop Bhutto from campaigning again nor stop the people of Pakistan re-electing her in 1993 but again she was removed on similar charges but this time by President Frooq Lehari. After that Bhutto fled into self-imposed exile in 1998, for fear of her own life and the lives of her family.<p>
On October 18th 2007 Bhutto returned to Pakistan to run in the general elections, after coming to an understanding with President Pervez Musharraf, by which all corruption charges were dropped and she was granted full amnesty. <p>
Even though Bhutto knew the dangers of returning to Pakistan, even though she knew there were people in higher powers that wanted her dead and gone. She continued rallying and continued to speak of hope to the nation.<p>
Multiple attempts were made at taking Benazir Bhutto’s life; sadly one of those attempts was successful. On December 27th 2007 after leaving a PPP rally in the city of Rawalpindi, Bhutto was assassinated. A mere two weeks before the date set for the 2008 general elections.<p>
No matter her religion or gender, Benazir Bhutto believed in and stood for having a free and democratic Pakistan. <p>
That belief so fuelled her faith that she worked hard at great risk and cost to make sure the idea of a better Pakistan was instilled now in the hearts and minds of her people and the future generations of both young men and women who see her as a SHEROE!<p>
Like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Indira Ghandi and other martyrs before her time, she died fighting for change and for a better world. </p>
She sacrificed her life for the greater good – something that Jesus before her, did as an example to us all.<p>
